Switch Pro Controller battery on PC: what you can actually see

The Switch Pro Controller works on Windows, but the PC treats it as a generic device, battery included. What you can read, and how.

The Switch Pro Controller is a favourite on PC, and deservedly so: excellent d-pad, comfortable grip, and battery life that outlasts almost everything else. That last quality is exactly why the battery question sneaks up on you: you go so long without thinking about it that you have no idea where you stand when it finally runs low.

Short answer: Windows sees a generic gamepad and shows no percentage for it. BatteryOnPC reads controllers directly and puts the level in the taskbar. Below, what a PC can and cannot read from a Switch Pro Controller, and why this pad deserves an alert more than any other.

Why Windows treats it as a stranger

The Xbox controller speaks XInput, a Microsoft protocol. The Pro Controller does not. Windows sees it as a generic HID device: the buttons and sticks work, but nothing identifies it as a gamepad in the sense games expect.

That is why many games ignore it until you route it through Steam Input or a compatibility layer. And it is the same reason for the battery: the Pro Controller reports its charge inside its own HID reports, in a Nintendo-specific format that Windows has no reason to decode.

What you can read today

Steam

Steam has supported the Pro Controller for a long time, including its battery. Connect it, open Settings › Controller, and the level appears. Enabling Nintendo layout support in the same place also fixes the button mapping.

The catch is familiar: the level exists only inside Steam. Close it, or launch a game from elsewhere, and it is gone.

Windows on its own

Settings › Bluetooth & devices will list the controller once paired, but generally without a percentage. If you see nothing there, nothing is broken: there is simply nothing for Windows to show.

A utility that decodes the report

The only route to a permanent level, outside Steam and outside any particular game. Support depends on the software: a tool built for PlayStation and Xbox controllers will not necessarily read a Nintendo report, since the format is different.

USB, and a trap worth knowing

The Pro Controller charges over USB-C, which is convenient. But two details catch people out.

  • A charge-only cable will charge it and leave it invisible to the PC. If the controller charges but nothing detects it, change cable before anything else.
  • Plugging it in while Steam is running sometimes creates a duplicate: the same controller seen twice, once over Bluetooth and once over USB. Disconnect the Bluetooth link before going wired.

The 40-hour paradox

Nintendo announces roughly 40 hours of battery life, and in practice it holds up. That is the real problem: with a controller you recharge once a month, you never build the habit of checking. It dies mid-session, without warning, on a Sunday evening.

Which makes it the controller that benefits most from a low-battery alert. Not because the battery is bad, but because it is good enough that you have stopped paying attention.
